Uji Kemahiran Berbahasa Indonesia (UKBI)

THE OFFICIAL INDONESIAN PROFICIENCY TEST

WHAT IS UKBI?

UKBI (Uji Kemahiran Berbahasa Indonesia) is a test of Indonesian language proficiency in both oral and written. This is the only official test from Indonesian government.

What are the sections of UKBI?

UKBI tests one’s ability in listening, reading comprehension, writing, speaking. UKBI also tests one’s comprehension on Indonesian grammar usage.

What are the areas to be tested on UKBI?

UKBI tests the usage of Indonesian language in different modes of communication and language style. They can range from informal daily conversation to formal written communication used in media, public, textbooks, etc.

Who can take the UKBI?

All Indonesian language speakers, both native and non-native speakers.

What are the structures of UKBI?

There are five sections in UKBI; multiple choice questions (Sections I, II, and III), writing (Section IV), and listening (Section V). The details are on the following table:

What does the grading system look like?

Please refer to the below grading system (out of 800 points).

Grade I, Distinction, Score 725—800

The examinee has perfect communication skills in Indonesian in both oral and writing. The examinee does not have any problems communicating for personal, social, professional and scientific purposes.

Grade II, Very Good, Score 641—724

The examinee demonstrates high proficiency in communicating in Indonesian, both oral and writing. The examinee does not have any problems communicating for survival, social and professional purposes. However, the examinee’s ability is still limited for complex academic purposes.

Grade III, Good, Score 578—640

The examinee demonstrates sufficient communication skills in Indonesian, both oral and writing. The examinee does not have any problems communicating for survival and social purposes. The examinee does not have any problems in communicating for professional purposes, in both simple and complex settings.

Grade IV, Average, Score 482—577

The examinee demonstrates sufficient communication skills in Indonesian, both oral and writing. The examinee does not have any problems communicating for survival and social purposes. However, the examinee’s ability is still limited for communicating for professional purposes in complex settings.

Grade V, Mediocre, Score 405—481

The examinee demonstrates sufficient communication skills in Indonesian, both oral and writing. The examinee’s ability is very limited to communicate for scientific purposes. The examinee’s ability to communicate is also limited for complex professional and social purposes but shows no difficulty in communicating for simple professional and social purposes.

Grade VI, Marginal, Score 326—404

The examinee demonstrates insufficient communication skills in Indonesian, both oral and writing. The examinee has no problem communicating for simple social purposes. However, the examinee still has problems communicating for complex social purposes. Thus, the examinee is not proficient enough in communicating for professional and scientific purposes.

Grade VII, Limited, Score 251—325

The examinee demonstrates highly insufficient communication skills in Indonesian, both oral and writing. The examinee is only able to communicate for social purposes. The examinee has room for improvement.  

What will the test takers get after sitting for UKBI?

Test takers will get a test report in a form of a certificate published by The Indonesian Language Center, The Ministry of Education and Culture.
